Meeting Babies at a Soul Level

Class 1
Letting Go of Preconceptions
We all bring something with us into the treatment room. Our beliefs, our histories, our spiritual frameworks, our unspoken needs to be helpful or to fix what is in front of us — these enter the clinical space whether we are aware of them or not, and they inevitably shape what unfolds.
In this opening session, we will take a careful and compassionate look at the preconceptions practitioners commonly carry into work with babies and families. We will explore how our own life experiences have shaped what we notice and what we miss, how our spiritual beliefs color our interpretation of what is happening, and how our own insecurities can quietly drive the direction of a session.

- Greater awareness of the unconscious beliefs and needs you carry into clinical work
- A clearer understanding of how these can support or hinder therapeutic outcomes
- Practical reflective tools for identifying when your own material is becoming active in a session
- A more honest and curious relationship with your own role as a practitioner

Class 2
Settling into Essence:
Finding the Hara
All human beings are exquisitely sensitive to the fields around them. Babies, with their open and unguarded nervous systems, are even more so. They do not simply respond to our techniques or our words, they resonate with our nervous system state, our heart field, and ultimately our very essence. The quality of our presence is, in many ways, the most powerful therapeutic tool we possess.
In this session we will explore practical ways to settle into what Eastern traditions call the Hara - the embodied centre of our essential nature. Through guided exercises and somatic practice, we will discover what it feels like to drop beneath the busy mind of the helping professional into a quieter, more grounded place from which true meeting becomes possible.

- A felt understanding of the Hara and what it means to be embodied in this way
- Practical exercises for accessing this state, both in daily life and before clinical work
- Insight into why your inner state matters as much as your clinical skill
- A new appreciation of how babies experience us at an energetic and essential level
Class 3
Relating from the Core
Building on the inner work of the previous session, we now turn to the question of how we relate to babies and families from this grounded, embodied place. When we work from our essence rather than from our doing, something quite different becomes possible. We create a field that babies can energetically trust, and we make space for the deep unresolved patterns they carry to surface, be acknowledged, and begin to integrate.
This session is rich in somatic practice. We will work with paired exercises designed to support relating from the Hara in everyday clinical encounters, not as a technique to be applied, but as a way of being that becomes increasingly natural with practice.

This work supports caregivers to become a steady, supportive presence so children can begin to heal and grow in connection.
- Direct experience of relating from your essential nature in a clinical context
- Somatic tools you can integrate into your daily practice from the next session onwards
- A deeper understanding of how energetic safety supports therapeutic emergence
- Greater confidence in holding space for what arises, without needing to fix it

Class 4
Resting in the Support That is Already Here
Many practitioners working with babies and families carry a quiet but significant burden - a sense of isolation, of needing to be the expert, of having to fix what is in front of us. This is unhelpful for our clients, and it is exhausting for us. It also misses something fundamental about the nature of healing: that we are not, and have never been, doing this work alone.
In this closing session, we will broaden our attention to the wider field of support that surrounds all of us; the dynamic, nurturing intelligence of the universe itself, expressed in different traditions as Shakti, as grace, as love. We will explore what it means to allow this support into our work, to be held rather than always doing the holding, and to recognize the higher intelligence that meets us when we make space for it.

- A felt sense of the support that is always available to you in your work
- Permission to step out of the role of expert and into the role of facilitator
- A more sustainable and less depleting way of holding your clinical practice
- An invitation into the spiritual and grace-filled dimension of healing work
John Wilks
John Wilks has been practicing and teaching the Bowen Technique and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy for over twenty-seven years. Pre- and perinatal psychology has become the cornerstone of his clinical work, a field he came to not only through studying with some of the pioneers of this work, but through his own decades-long inquiry into how the earliest experiences of life shape us. His journey in this work followed significant early trauma, which led him to pursue body psychotherapy, meditation and yoga which all contribute to his approach to healing today.
John's commitment to this work is informed by personal experience as well as clinical observation. Through the gradual recognition that the deepest patterns shaping adult life were laid down in infancy, he brings to his teaching a depth of understanding that bridges the scientific and the deeply human dimensions of this field. His approach integrates the wisdom drawn from three decades of clinical practice with mothers, babies, and adults working with prenatal and birth imprints.
He is the author of four books, including An Integrative Approach to Treating Babies and Children and Choices in Pregnancy and Childbirth. A co-founder of the Breath of Life Conferences in London, he has taught extensively across more than twenty-five countries and directs two international online learning platforms, ehealthlearning.tv and ourbirthjourney.com.
John brings to this series on Meeting Babies at a Soul Level a rare combination of clinical expertise, personal insight, and a profound respect for those who cannot yet speak for themselves.
